Through our Nursing Home Pet Therapy Program, St. Tammany Humane Society gives local residents of assisted living facilities the gentle affection of a rescue animal. For over five years, we have visited local area nursing homes with an adoptable pet each month. Our pets visit 7 facilities including Christwood Retirement Community, Brookdale of Mandeville and The Trace of Covington.
This 100% volunteer based program not only allows senior citizens a fun activity each month, it is a life-changing experience for our volunteers. "When you walk into one of the facilities and see the residents' faces light up, that's when you know you're doing something that truly makes a difference," says Nursing Home Pet Therapy Coordinator, Phyllis Henry. "It's not only a great socialization opportunity for the rescue animals, it's also something exciting for people in our community. The residents look forward to our arrival each month. It's truly indescribable."
