Tiago Deserves a Second Chance
Meet Tiago. He's an 8 month old Cane Corso that came into our veterinary clinic to be euthanized on Friday. His owners were in tears. Dr. Newfield and th
e technicians instantly fell in love with this sweet boy and knew Euthanasia wasn't going to be an option.
Rewind to 1 year ago. Tiago's owners decided that they wanted to own a Cane Corso. Knowing that the breed has some history of musculoskeletal issues, they did their homework. They researched the breed, researched breeders and finally selected one out of Kentucky. A few months later Tiago joined their family. He was bred from a line of champions, including the No. 4 Cane Corso in the country.
Fast forward to the end of October. Tiago, who had been doing great, all of sudden, had trouble getting up. Concerned, his owners took Tiago to their veterinarian who examined Tiago, took x-rays and gave his owners the devastating news: Tiago has severe hip dysplasia and needed surgery - an expensive surgery that his owners couldn't afford. In talking with Tiago's owners, we learned that he came with a hip dysplasia guarantee in which the breeder would replace the puppy if he were to develop hip dysplasia before the age of two. However, this required that 1) the owner pay for surgery to get Tiago fixed or that 2) they provide documentation that they had the first puppy euthanized. Since they couldn't afford surgery, they felt they had no other option, especially since it wasn't fair for Tiago to have to go on in so much pain without the surgery.

Luckily for Tiago, we were able to talk his breeder into a third situation that would not void his guarantee: Tiago becomes a resident of the St Tammany Humane Society and we raise the funds to cover his surgery. We knew we were taking on a lot and are anticipating over $4000 in surgery and rehabilitation costs, but in the end it will be worth it. This sweet boy deserves this chance, his second chance.
Currently we have $3,910 toward Tiago's surgery
