Not even one month after the devastasting floods hit Louisiana August of 2016, six very special mommy dogs and 50 of their newborn puppies needed our help! We didn't plan for this group of mothers, but when they came, we too received a lesson in love. Each of these poor mommy dogs suffered at the hands of uncaring humans, but through it all they each were amazing mothers to their babies and now...

A couple of weeks ago we met Mr. Keith Lessor. Many may recognize him because he is a homeless man who regularly travels down Harrison Ave., both dogs by his side (Freedom to the left and Patriot to the right.) He loves both of these pups and they are well cared for by not only Mrs. Lessor, but also by our community. A kind woman (who would like to remain anonymous) wanted to help Keith get both...

Heartworm disease is a parasite that infects the heart after being transmitted via mosquitos. If left untreated the disease is always fatal to the animal. Sadly, because many people are unaware of the dire effects of heartworms, we rescue an average of eight dogs per month with this deadly disease. There was no telling how long he had been trapped or how long it had been since his last meal. We had to act fast! STHS Adoptions Counselor, Dawn Valenzuela, along with two volunteers immediately jumped in our...

"When we finally got to her she was laying in the grass and had given up"  Younique is a one-year-old Great Pyrenees/Collie mix who was rescued Friday, December 23rd from the middle of the interstate around Carrollton, Texas. Jennifer Shiflett and her family were traveling to Mandeville to visit for the holidays when they spotted her in the median of the interstate. Younique had clearly been hit...

After a flat tire, a broken exhaust clamp and very little sleep, five women are heading back to Louisiana today (Sunday) with an empty trailer and five very happy hearts. On Friday afternoon, three St. Tammany Humane Society staff members and two dedicated volunteers with a trailer full of homeless “flood dogs” made their way to Jacksonville, Florida for the largest mega-adoption event in the...
