International Homeless Animals' Day

Saturday, August 18th, is International Homeless Animals Day, started by the organization ISAR (International Society for Animal Rights).  On this day, shelters, rescue groups, animal welfare organizations, and animal lovers the world over come together to raise awareness about the pet overpopulation epidemic.

In St. Tammany Parish alone, thousands of animals are euthanized each year due to pet overpopulation.   It is a disheartening fact, and one that the St. Tammany Humane Society  battles on a day to day basis by implementing programs that promote spay/neuter, establishing a growing network of foster homes, raising awareness through humane education, and of course always embracing opportunities to increase our adoptions and drive home our personal message:  Live.  Love.   Rescue.

One of these opportunities is right around the corner, and St. Tammany Humane Society is recognizing International Homeless Animals Day with many ingredients that will hopefully come together in creating a recipe for community awareness regarding who we are and how we help the homeless animals in St. Tammany, as well as sending a record number of homeless cats and dogs to their forever homes on Saturday, August 18th!!  We strive for nothing less than breaking our adoption record on International Homeless Animals Day, and invite all animal lovers to come together with STHS on this day to help us achieve our goal:  finding homes for the shelter animals here that have inched quite close to our collective heart.

In honor of, and in anticipation of, Homeless Animals Day, St. Tammany Humane Society is holding a candlelight vigil Friday, August 17th with Bonnie Poirier of Peaceful Planet Pets Ministry performing pet blessings.  The candlelight vigil will begin at 6:00 until dusk, and is open to the public.  Refreshments will be provided and Pastor Bonnie Poirier will do a blessing of the shelter animals, followed by a blessing of the attendees’ pets.
