Baby Girl
This is the journey of a gorgeous dog named Baby Girl. Baby Girl is a three year old American Staffordshire terrier (American family to the Pitt Bull)
with a heart of gold. She came to the St. Tammany Humane Society almost 2 years ago. Baby Girl, along with two other Pitt Bulls were rescued from a "bad home" and brought to us in hopes of finding new and forever homes. After years passed and the other two dogs were adopted, the staff became a little worried that Baby Girl may never find the right family to call her own. But the STHS staff never gave up!! Baby Girl was always a big favorite around the shelter, being that she was the sweetest and most happy girl ever! Even when Ian Somerhalder from the CWs Vampire Diaries stopped by for a visit, he immediately fell in love with this dog and lent a helping hand in finding her a home. On Monday, August 2nd, Baby Girl's dreams became a reality when Travis and Ashley Brown along with their daughter, Marissa, fell in love with the beautiful dog. Everyone was sooooooo ecstatic, we just had to shoot Baby Girl going to her new home!!!! Here is the video, Enjoy!!!!!
Dude & Missie
Dude (a 10 year old terrier mix) and Missie ( a 4 year old Golden mix) came to the shelter almost a year ago, July of 2009 to be exact. These two dogs had both grown up together in a caring home, but were suddenly pulled from their family due to medical conditions beyond their previous owners control. That is when we took the two of them in under our wing and began the search to find them a new family. At that moment, the STHS staff knew it would be quite a challenge to find these two older dogs new homes, and even harder for them to get adopted togther. Dude and Missie had thoughts of their own: they knew the perfect person would come to their rescue and adopt both and give them the love and attention they so deerly deserved. On June of this year, their dreams became a reality. A lady by the name of Trudy Campbell had been following the story of these two dogs for months and just couldn't take it any longer! She came to the shelter, looked both of them in the eys and immediately adopted the two dogs together!!
"Hi folks--it's been a month now and Dude and Missie have settled in great! They really love the big yard--it's four acres of a dog's dream come true. Missie runs around like a rocket, her tail like a flag, and she's so cute with that haircut. Dude is getting stronger and stronger--he spent 20 minutes running around in a big circle barking this morning because he could smell last night's possum in the grass. The pictures don't do them justice--I'll have to get some action shots and send them along later. I just wanted to let you know that they're doing great and we are so very happy to have them. Thanks again." Trudy Campbell
Nari (Patti Mayonaise)
The beginning of the hot summer months marks what we like to call "kitten season." This is the time when our shelter, along with many others, are full of tons of kittens looking for new and forever homes. Thanks to the community and people that consider adopting, many of the stray kittens have found new homes. One of these lucky kittens, Patti Mayonaise, was chosen as a couple's first pet! here is their story:
"Phil and I adopted our first little addition to our new family about 5 days ago. We were a little nervous at first, but decided that it was time for us to take on a little responsibility for the life of a small kitty. We decided that we were going to go to the St. Tammany Humane Society because they are a no kill facility. They had quite a few kittens to chose from and it took us about 30 minutes to make our way to the little tortoiseshell that was waiting, quite calmly I might add, in the last cage.
So now we have Nari! She is the sweetest kitten I have seen. This small cat comes eqipped with a huge personality. Not only is she an early riser...but she goes through these spells where she runs as fast as she can through the apartment. She does this just as soon and Phil and I get in the bed but calms down in about 10 minutes. She also experiences separation anxiety sometimes when we leave the room to go to the bathroom... She has really come out of her shell the last week and made the transition to "Princess of the house" quite smoothly. She and Phil are pretty inseparable and I'm kind of partial to her too! Phil has bonded with her nicely which surprised both of us because he has always claimed to be a "dog person" and always vetoed the idea of having a cat. We absolutely love her and couldn't have asked for a better pet!"

Chester (Cougar)
This is Cougar, a 1 1/2 year old Lab/Spar-Pei mix who came to the humane society earlier this year. Cougar's journey is a little fuzzy, but the outcome is clear! Somehow, Cougar came to us from another rescue, St. Tammany Animal Rescue Team. Being that he was a healthy dog with all of his shots, he was quickly placed into our adoption program to find a new and froever home. Right away the STHS staff realized that he was a great dog: well-mannered, freindly, and playful. Only a couple of weeks passed when a young couple toured our shelter and immediately fell in love with Cougar. His name is now Chester and he is loving life! Words can not explain, but these pictures say a thousand words!

Finn (Riley) (Sherman)
Riley, as you can see, has had many different names and his journey is just to say the same! Riley is a 3year old, male cattle dog who loves being around people and other pets. He came to the St. Tammany Humane Society as a stray in late August of 2009. It was quickly revealed that he had a heart full of heartworms and a long treatment ahead of him (3 months to be exact). Like many other dogs the shelter takes in, Riley successfull went through heartworm treatment and was placed in our adoption program. After patiently waiting to find a new home for almost 6 months, Riley's journey took another drastic turn. He was choosen by another shelter to be transported, along with 25 others, to Rhode Island in hopes of finding a home up north. This is when he took the name of Sherman. After arriving in Rhode Island, a lady by the name of Emily quickly fell in love with Sherman, gave him a new home, and changed his name once again to Finn. Now, Finn lives in New York and loves it! Here is what Emily said, "Finn is even better than I could've hoped for - he's so well behaved, playful and eager to please, I can't believe I got so lucky. His transition was easy, especially because he gets lots of play with other dogs every morning and evening. Thank you so much for everything and for bringing Finn up here for me!"

Bravo (Buckshot)
On September of 2008, a lady came across a wounded dog who desperately needed her help. Scared for his safety and a lover of the animal kind, the lady quickly brought him to a local vet where it was revealed that Buckshot had been shot in the leg and was going to need amputation. After finding out the terrible news, the lady sadly confessed that she did not have the financial resources to correct his condition. This is when Buckshot found his way to the St. Tammany Humane. On September 19th, 2008, we took him under our wing and gave Buckshot what he deserved: a second chance! After successfully undergoing surgery, he was ready for the last stage of his journey. Two months later, Buckshot got just what he had been waiting for, a new and forever home. Darcy Phillips toured the shelter in hopes of finding a playmate for her Labradoodle, Viva, and soon came accross the loving eyes of Buckshot. The same day, she adopted Buckshot, gave him a new name of Bravo, and took him to her loving home where he has remained. Still two years later, she says he does just fine with his three legs and Viva is so much happier since he came into their lives. It is because of people like her and the lady that took him in originally, that the STHS can do what they do best: save the lives of animals no matter what the costs, becasue it is all worth it in the end!
Bravo (on right) and his new Family

Princess
Princess is a female, 6 year old Pitbull Terrier who came to the shelter over three years ago. Princess was seized from a home of abuse and/or neglect from Animal Services and then turned over to us on April 2007. At first, Princess was extremely terrified and very hessitant to approach humans probably due to her past history before she arrived at the St. Tammany Humane Society. And to make things even worse, we soon found out that Princess tested positive for heartworms, an awfully painful and deadly disease. After months of heartworm treatment and a little love from the employees at the shelter; Princess was ready to find a new and forever home. After almost one year of being here, learning to trust humans, and overcoming heartworm treatment, Princess found exactly what she had been waiting for: a great family to take her home and call her own!
It has been over two years since Princess was adopted. And boy does she still look great, always a smile from ear to ear! We get to see her from time and time again as she comes to get her annual vaccinations, etc. Her new family absolutley loves Princess and says she is exactly what they were looking for: a dog to play with the kids and chill out with the folks. And Princess, well she told us the same thing with a little added: she says, " I love my new family, thanks STHS for making this happen!"
Princess and Her New Family

Merlin
Merlin is a male, 1 1/2 year old Rottweiler full of love and compassion. He came to the shelter in December 2009 as a stray full of heartworms. After successfully undergoing months of treatment, Merlin was ready for adoption. Four month passed, and then Merlin found the perfect family to adopt him. On April 2, 2010, Criswell and Kim Brown came to look at merlin and instantly knew he was the one! here is their story:
"Well we have had Merlin since April 3, 2010. He is such a joy in our lives. We weren't going to get another dog after our Dakota & Princess (Rottweilers) passed. But I had been looking at Merlin on line and we couldn't resist riding our motorcycle over to Covington and meeting him. When he came in the adoption room it was pretty much over, because he piled up on the couch with us and just wouldn't take no for an answer. He is so full of energy and just a blast to have around. He never gets tired. We walk two miles, early in the morning and that just winds him up. He has almost six fenced acres to run in, so that helps him to release all that energy. We can't thank Patricia enough and St. Tammany Humane Society for rescuing him. I hate to think where he would be if he hadn't been brought in. Rest assured he has the best home possible, and we wouldn't trade him for the world. Thanks so much!!"
