Give your Time

Give Your Time

The St. Tammany Humane Society is calling on its community to lend a helping hand.  The St. Tammany Humane Society is the only non-profit animal welfare and sheltering organization serving St. Tammany Parish and the more than 1,000 orphaned pets it receives each and every year.  The shelter depends solely upon the support of the community to keep its operation running, and to continue to save the lives of these companion animals.  Realizing these difficult economic times, the shelter is reaching out for your support in other ways, specifically volunteerism.

Some people feel like they don’t have the time to commit to volunteering, but that’s the beauty of it - you’re the volunteer, so you say when you come in, and when you go home.  You are the boss, and you get the ultimate reward:  knowing that you have done good; you have made the difference in an orphaned pet’s life.

Now that the kids are back in school, many of us have as much as 8 hours a day freed up to do something that makes us feel good.  Do you know what you can do in 8 hours?

  • You can walk as many as 90 dogs, giving them the love, fresh air, and exercise they need.
  • You can play with 65 cats, giving them the socialization they need to be prepared for a permanent, loving home.
  • You can assist our Kennel Staff with the Pets-to-Go/Adoption Mobile at big, off-site events.
  • You can help clean up the administrative area and help get the office nice and organized to run more efficiently.
  • You can plant some trees, giving the animals a shaded area to play and relax while enjoying their time outside.
  • You could cut the grass, create a garden, paint the fence, or do anything outside to spruce up the facade of the shelter, making it more inviting for other prospective volunteers, donors, or adopters.

There really is something for everyone at the shelter, and we hope that you will heed the call, and see what you can offer to the orphaned pets of our community through your time and talents.  Remember:  Volunteers are not paid - not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!  :)  For more information, contact Leslie Durio, Volunteer Coordinator and Humane Educator:  (985)892-PETS (-7387) or (985)893-WISH (-9474) x 106, or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Who We Are

The St. Tammany Humane Society is the only non-profit animal sheltering and welfare organization serving St. Tammany parish, and as such, we rely primarily on the assistance of the community we serve to care for the more than 1,000 orphaned pets that enter our shelter each year.

We offer a variety of services and have developed several programs to give these companion animals a second chance and a new leash on life.

Please take some time to dig in to the site and see what we’ve got to wag our tail about.
